Rutgers SEBS Nutritional Sciences Dietetic Internship Program

Our recently accredited Dietetic Internship (DI) program is housed within the Department of Nutritional Sciences, School of Environmental and Biological Sciences (SEBS) at Rutgers University, New Brunswick. The SEBS Nutritional Sciences DI program provides students with learning and practice opportunities to attain the required competencies to prepare for the national registration examination to become a registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN).

This program is designed to be completed in four consecutive terms comprised of 30 credits of coursework and a minimum of 1000 hours supervised practice at diverse sites within the metropolitan New Jersey area. The MS/DI program curriculum incorporates coursework that can be counted toward a Master of Science in Nutritional Sciences as well as supervised practice. Program graduation dates may vary due to individual student needs and prior preparation.

Graduates of the program will be prepared to enter the growing field of nutrition and dietetics and be eligible to take the Commission on Dietetic Registration's (CDR) credentialing exam for registered dietitian nutritionists.

Program Highlights

  • ACEND accredited graduate-level program, at Rutgers - New Brunswick, that integrates coursework and minimum of 1,000 hours of supervised practice.
  • Rutgers University - New Brunswick, part of the Big Ten Conference, is ranked #15 top public university in the nation.
  • In-person program that provides all coordination for supervised practice rotation sites. Rotation sites secured in the metropolitan New Jersey area.
  • Students typically complete the program in four terms.
  • Documentation of previous learning can be considered as a substitute for up to 750 hours of supervised practice, pending approval from the Program Director.
  • Students entering with a baccalaureate degree (e.g., B.S.) as their highest earned degree can substitute up to 12 semester credit hours with evidence of prior graduate-level learning. For students entering with a master’s degree or higher, up to 24 credits can be substituted.
  • After fulfilling the program requirements, graduates may sit for the Commission on Dietetic Registration's credentialing exam to become a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, complying with the CDR's mandate of holding at least a master's degree starting January 1, 2024.

The Rutgers University School of Environmental and Biological Sciences (SEBS) Dietetic Internship program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND®) to prepare registered dietitian nutritionists (RDN).
