Curriculum

Students will earn a Master of Science (MS) in Nutritional Sciences and acquire the minimum of 1046 hours of Dietetics Supervised Practice needed to achieve the competencies to become a registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN).

MS Coursework

  • Medical Nutrition Therapy (16:709:508)
    Application of pathophysiology of diseases states addressing prevention and treatment of patients at risk of nutritional complications.
  • Health Promotion in Nutrition and Dietetics 1 (16:709:524)
    Evidence-based practice with emphasis on accurate interpretation of scientific information and translation into actionable nutrition behaviors for varied consumer and professional audiences.
  • Introduction to Applied Nutrition Research (16:709:503)
    Skills in the conduct and interpretation of research. Emphasis given to study design, instrumentation, analysis, and ethical issues.
  • Advanced Topics in Disease Prevention (16:709:510)
    Advanced topics in disease prevention and treatment including those related to professional practice, development, and leadership. Specific attention will be directed to nutrition needs of patients to provide students with current knowledge and evidence-based application in dietary prevention, treatment, and management of patients
  • Health Promotion in Nutrition and Dietetics 2 (16:709:526)
    Advanced skills in evidence-based nutrition practice with emphasis on communicating with professional audiences using an array of communication modes.
  • Dietetics Supervised Practice (16:709:618)
    Links the expertise acquired in the classroom to supervised learning experiences in an array of professional practice settings such as inpatient hospitals, ambulatory care clinics, community centers, food service operations, and student-defined specialty area to acquire minimum of 1000 hours of supervised practice.
  • Research Supervised Practice (16:709:644)
    Links the expertise acquired in the classroom with the application of research skills leading to completion of a directed nutrition research project.

Masters’ requirements include satisfactory completion of all requirements for Rutgers University, School of Graduate Studies (SGS).

  • Completion of 30-semester hours of graduate level coursework
  • Completion of master’s research project requirements
  • Achievement of a grade B or better in all coursework
  • Compliance with Rutgers (SGS) policies and requirements for a graduate degree.

Schedule

Dietetic interns observe the Rutgers Academic Calendar for term start/end dates and holidays. The academic calendar is updated yearly. Students will typically complete the program in four terms. Most terms include both classroom coursework and dietetics supervised practice. The dietetic internship program reserves the right to alter the calendar to accommodate program requirements, including weather emergencies and unique learning experience opportunities (e.g., events, speakers, supervised practice availability)                                                          *Students may access information regarding all Rutgers Technology Services here.
